Window Trim & Capping: What to Ask
A clean edge needs a clear scope.
Separate appearance, underlying condition and water management.
Trim and capping describe finish work around a window. They do not, by themselves, prove that the underlying material is sound or that the opening’s water-management design is complete. Ask what is being covered and why.

Three things to distinguish
The underlying material
Ask which existing parts remain and how their condition will be assessed. Record how deterioration discovered during the job is handled.
The visible finish
Identify material, profile, color, joints and who completes any painting. Review an example at normal viewing distance.
The installation detail
Ask how the finish relates to the selected window’s instructions and the surrounding wall. Keep required drainage paths functional.
Review the finish before committing
01 · Walk a similar example
Look at corners, edges and the transition to the wall, not just the window glass.
02 · Request a written description
Replace “exterior finish included” with enough detail to understand the actual work.
03 · Clarify repair allowances
Ask whether underlying repairs are included or require a change order.
04 · Inspect the completed opening
Review appearance, operation, cleanup and any documented exceptions with the installer.
When a low-maintenance claim is too broad
Ask for the actual care requirements and warranty terms of the specified materials. A new exterior finish may change the maintenance routine, but it should not be sold as eliminating every future inspection or repair. Keep sealant and finish responsibilities clear.
Common misunderstandings
Will capping repair rotten wood?
Covering material is not the same as repairing it. Resolve the underlying condition in the project scope.
Is trim the same as flashing?
Treat finish and water-management details as separate questions. Ask the contractor to explain both in the actual opening.
What belongs in the final records?
Keep the selected materials, color, installation scope, repair photos when available and written warranty information.
