Window Glass Pressure & Capillary Tubes

The airspace travels, too.

What mountain-home buyers should confirm before glass is ordered.

Elevation changes can create a pressure difference between the sealed space in insulating glass and the surrounding air. The right response depends on the actual glass unit and the manufacturer’s instructions—not a universal altitude cutoff.

Why the panes can change shape

Cardinal’s IG13 bulletin explains that moving sealed insulating glass from a lower to a higher elevation can bow panes outward; a large pressure difference can damage glass or seals. The bulletin distinguishes small capillary tubes from larger temporary breather tubes. They are not interchangeable products or homeowner adjustments.

Two terms to keep separate

Capillary tubes

Small tubes intended to manage pressure in specified applications. Ask whether the proposed unit uses them and what the manufacturer requires.

Breather tubes

A different pressure-equalization approach. Ask for the exact product instructions rather than treating the name as a synonym.

What about argon?

Cardinal’s August 2020 bulletin says argon diffuses through capillary tubes and describes limitations for its products. Do not extend that statement to every manufacturer or assume an advertised gas-fill rating applies to an altered configuration. Request the delivered unit’s specification.

Before shipping

01 · Provide the installation address and elevation.

Include planned storage and transport through higher passes.

02 · Identify the exact glass construction.

Record dimensions, pane count and any approved pressure-management method.

03 · Assign responsibility.

Who follows the manufacturer’s handling instructions, and what documentation accompanies delivery?

04 · Keep the paperwork.

Save the approved configuration, applicable ratings and written warranty terms.

If something looks wrong

Should I seal or cut a tube myself?

No. Contact the supplier for the product-specific procedure and authorized service.

Does every bowed reflection mean failure?

Do not diagnose from a reflection alone. Photograph the condition, note when it appeared and ask the supplier to evaluate it.

Does an online quote approve altitude suitability?

No. It is a budgeting step; the actual order needs the relevant manufacturer review.
