Inside vs. Outside Mount Shades

Where the shade sits changes the result.

A mounting decision guide before final measurements.

Inside mount places the treatment within the window recess. Outside mount places it over the opening on an appropriate mounting surface. Neither is automatically better: depth, handles, trim, coverage and secure attachment decide what fits.

Choose the effect you want

Inside mount

Start here when you want the surrounding trim visible. Ask whether the exact brackets and headrail fit the usable recess, and how far the finished treatment will project.

Outside mount

Consider this when recess depth is limited or you want greater coverage around the opening. Identify where the brackets can attach and what the treatment will cover when raised.

Check the opening before ordering

01 · Photograph it open and closed

Include cranks, locks, alarm sensors, trim and anything projecting into the recess.

02 · Choose the actual product

A roller shade, cellular shade and shutter can require different clearance. A generic depth measurement does not establish compatibility.

03 · Confirm the finished dimensions

Distinguish opening measurements from ordered product size. Follow the selected manufacturer’s instructions; do not apply an assumed deduction.

04 · Assign final measuring responsibility

Write down who checks the opening, who submits the size and how a sizing problem will be handled.

After replacement windows

New jambs or trim may change the usable recess. Keep preliminary measurements for budgeting, then confirm the finished opening before ordering custom treatments. A proposed shade should still allow normal window operation and access for cleaning.

Questions worth asking

Will outside mount eliminate all light gaps?

It may offer more coverage, but the result depends on overlap, projection and the chosen system. Ask for an installed drawing rather than a promise based on the mount name.

Can I reuse the old brackets?

Do not assume so. Confirm the new hardware, mounting surface and fasteners with the installer.
