Bedroom Window Treatments
Plan for the hour you need to sleep.
A sleep, privacy and operation brief for choosing bedroom shades.
Choose bedroom treatments around the actual sleep schedule, outside light and privacy needs. Specify how dark you want the room and how the treatment will operate from the bed or normal standing position.

Build a one-room brief
01 · Name the difficult light
Early sunrise, a streetlight and daytime sleep are different conditions. Photograph the problem at the relevant time.
02 · Define the privacy expectation
Consider neighboring windows and indoor lights at night, not just the view during a daytime consultation.
03 · Review the edges
Ask how the proposed mount and complete system address side, top and bottom light.
04 · Try everyday operation
Check reach, effort and controls. For motorization, establish charging or service access and the offline routine.
Fabric is not the whole room
A fabric described as blackout does not alone promise a completely dark installed room. Discuss the whole opening and other light sources. Norman’s blackout resource can help identify product directions, but the proposal should state the actual fabric, hardware and expected result.
Two useful priorities
For a light-sensitive sleeper
Ask for a sample and a clear explanation of remaining light paths. Agree on the performance expectation before ordering.
For a flexible guest room
Make the controls easy to understand without an app tutorial. Keep written operating guidance where guests can find it.
Keep the window usable
What about a child’s room?
Use current CPSC cordless guidance and review the complete installation. Keep furniture and beds away from windows and cords.
Can a large treatment block access?
Review window operation and any required escape access with the project professional. Do not let furniture or permanent hardware make the opening unusable.
